dApps or Decentralized Apps are applications Mobile, Browser or Desktop that communicate directly with the blockchain.

Decentralized Apps typically connect to the blockchain for identity (wallet address), scan transactions and write data through smart contracts.

dApps are superior to Apps that depend on cloud services (AWS etc) for their data and backend services as the data in cloud services can be deleted or modified. Cloud services themselves can drop out or one day close down due to their centralisation (by the service or the owner's decision). Whereas the blockchain by design is immutable, meaning it cannot be modified or deleted.
